Transport Fever 3 Tycoon guide: towns, ratings and maintenance

How the announced Tycoon systems connect town needs, six ratings, company progression, maintenance and difficulty settings.

Last updated: 2026-09-28

How does Tycoon mode work?

Tycoon is the announced management mode in which transporting passengers and required goods helps towns grow, while a town's ratings affect how effectively that work counts toward growth. Growing the world's population raises the player's company rank and unlocks bonuses. This is a guide to the developer's published systems, not a tested opening strategy or a promise that a particular route will be profitable. Urban Games' Tycoon developer blog explains the growth model; the publisher's gameplay overview connects town growth to company progression.

What makes a town grow?

The developer says towns have 18 growth levels, from small hamlets to metropolises. Passenger trips and delivery of goods that the town requires award experience. Longer passenger trips can award more than trips wholly within one town; more complex cargo chains can award more experience than simple deliveries. These are relationships described by the developer, not published experience-point formulas. A town's six ratings scale the effect of experience, so simply adding more vehicles does not settle every growth constraint. Tycoon developer blog, “From small hamlet to large metropolis”.

Town ratingWhat the published explanation connects it toQuestion to check in a live game
Reputation

Construction impacts such as clearing forest and moving earth; recovery and improvements such as planting trees.

Did a construction choice change the municipality's rating?
Satisfaction

Passenger waits and journey time; faster or more comfortable vehicles may help.

Are the passengers waiting too long, or is the trip itself slow?
Delivery

Goods have different expected delivery times. Late goods still earn revenue but lower this rating.

Is this cargo arriving within its expected time?
Traffic

Congestion as growing populations travel; infrastructure and public transport can affect it.

Is city traffic slowing the network?
Noise

Noisy infrastructure near homes versus more distant hubs and quieter local links.

Does a route's location create a noise trade-off?
Pollution

Industries, vehicles and infrastructure across the wider municipal area.

Would a different footprint reduce pollution in this municipality?

These categories and examples come from the developer's six-rating explanation. The last column is our observation checklist for the released game, not a verified instruction to build any specific line. For instance, moving a noisy station farther out may affect journey time and maintenance cost; the official blog explicitly presents that as a trade-off. The publisher also names noise barriers, underground railways, planting greenery and pollution facilities as available tools, without publishing universal effectiveness figures. How do vehicles and maintenance affect a plan?

Vehicle choice is more than speed alone in the published system: passenger waiting and travel time influence satisfaction, while different goods tolerate different delivery times. The developer contrasts time-sensitive food with bulk goods such as stone; it does not publish a universal best vehicle for either. Maintenance is automatic when vehicles operate within range of appropriate facilities, provided the facility's capacity is not exhausted; the developer does not say a vehicle must enter a depot. The publisher says neglected vehicles gradually slow down and create more noise and pollution. Before judging a route, check its demand, timing, facility range and capacity separately. What do company ranks, headquarters and landmarks unlock?

The developer describes ranks earned by growing the world's population. Higher ranks unlock bonuses and headquarters expansions. A headquarters gives a growth bonus to the nearest town, and later upgrades add bonuses. Completed landmarks have effects in the municipal area where they are built. The publisher also lists resource prospecting, marketing campaigns and pollution reduction among progression rewards, plus optional contracts and subsidies as extra goals or rewards. Their placement, side effects and conditions matter; an announcement is not enough to calculate an optimal sequence. Can the difficulty and town systems be changed?

Yes. The developer describes preset difficulty levels and individual settings for mechanics, including the option to disable selected mechanics. Costs can be turned off, and the developer says players can start at Tycoon rank with bonuses and landmarks available. Sandbox adds further world-editing controls, including changing time, placing cities and industries, adjusting cargo needs and freezing city growth. Those creative controls should not be assumed to be ordinary Tycoon progression. Developer blog, “From tycoon game to sandbox”.

What should I check when the game launches?

  1. Read the selected mode and difficulty settings before comparing two saves.
  2. Inspect a town's required passenger and cargo demand, then its six ratings; identify which constraint is currently visible.
  3. Compare waiting and delivery time with a vehicle's route and maintenance-facility range and capacity.
  4. Check a proposed headquarters or landmark's municipal area and stated effect before placing it.
  5. Record any actual costs, thresholds or interface steps from the released version before treating them as a repeatable guide.

This sequence is an editorial verification checklist, not a tested build order. As of 28 September 2026, this site has not played or unpacked the release version. No exact rating thresholds, profit formula, vehicle rankings or optimal town-growth recipe are established here.
